2026
hackathon project for Sime Darby Property 2026 University Hackathon

BorrowLah is a community app built for Malaysian townships. It helps residents borrow and lend items, give away things they no longer use, join neighbourhood events, help neighbours, and record their recycling.
The idea is simple: borrow before buying, pass things on before throwing them away, and recycle together. Eligible, verified participation can earn BetterPoints. Township managers can use aggregate activity to understand what residents need and plan shared resources.

The thinking
We started with everyday situations. Someone might need a pressure washer for one afternoon. Another household might have spare plant pots sitting unused. A resident might recycle regularly but have no clear way to follow a township goal.

These actions already happen, but they can be difficult to organise and complete. BorrowLah brings them into one place. For borrowing, both sides confirm the handover and return. For events, attendance is checked before points are awarded. Recycling totals are clearly labelled as self-reported estimates.
We wanted the app to make sharing easier while giving residents a reason to keep participating. We also wanted township managers to see useful patterns without turning private resident activity into a public dashboard.
The results
We built a working prototype with borrowing, giveaways, events, recycling, BetterPoints, and township management features. We tested key journeys locally, including the borrowing process, responsive layouts, and accessibility. We also created a separate interactive preview so hackathon judges can explore sample journeys without using real resident data.
The next step is a small resident pilot. We still need to learn whether people will list items, complete loans, and return to the app, as well as how much work it creates for township staff. We have not collected real pilot results or measured environmental impact yet. For now, BorrowLah shows how a township could make sharing and participation easier to start, track, and improve.
